Let’s face it, no one likes to see a scorpion in their house! In Arizona scorpions can be a big issue for homeowners. Certain neighborhoods have ‘pocket’s of them, while others don’t. However, where there is one, chance are there are many. For the do-it yourself folks there are some techniques that we have found that can work.

First, do you really have them? Scorpions are hard to find, especially during the day when they aren’t active. Look for scorpions at night. Get a black lightbulb from the store and use it in your flashlight. Shine on the walls, corners, hidden areas under furniture, around BBQ’s and other crevices. Their exoskeletons will glow in the black light. You may even find babies in the grass with this light. They will glow a bright green when under the light.

Second, move quick to kill them. Use a blunt object and hit them. As gross as it sounds, you will have to pierce their Exoskeleton with a tool. You can also try setting out sticky traps that you would use to capture mice or roaches. Another option is to try diatomaceous earth, the tiny shards of fossil effectively pierce scorpions’ exoskeletons when they happen to scuttle over the powder.

Scorpions tend to play dead. Never pick one up with your bare hands even if you are sure you killed it.

Third, remove their food sources. If you have scorpions it will be difficult to control them if they have an abundant source of other insects to eat around your house. Keep your house clean, sprinkling boric acid or diatomaceous earth along baseboards, and using insecticide are all ways you can eliminate pests.

Scorpions are attracted to moisture. Make sure none of your pipes are leaking, check bathrooms for damp spots and keep your pool towels put away!
